FAQs about Allergy Immunotherapy

Allergy immunotherapy is a treatment that aims to desensitize a person's immune system to specific allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, or animal dander. Below are the frequently asked questions about allergy immunotherapy.

  • How often is sublingual allergen immunotherapy taken?

Sublingual allergen immunotherapy extracts are usually taken on a daily basis.

Common methods for taking the allergen extracts:

    • Take in the morning on an empty stomach.
    • Keep the drops or tablet under the tongue for at least two minutes, then swallow.
    • Do not eat/drink anything for 15 minutes.
    • Avoid foods that may cut the tongue and increase the likelihood of mouth irritation from the extracts.
    • If you forget to take them in the morning, continue treatment the next morning at the usual dosage.

  • What is allergen immunotherapy?

Changing the immune system's ability to react to allergens is the goal of allergy immunotherapy. Regular administration of allergen extracts makes up AIT, which involves slowly increasing doses of allergen extracts over time. In turn, tolerance to allergens develops with fewer or no symptoms. Three years of AIT can result in five to ten years of benefits. However, the symptoms may return afterward.

  • Immunotherapy: Who Can Benefit from It?

    • Those who are looking for a long-term solution to their allergy problem.
    • Patients who cannot avoid allergen triggers (pollen, dust, pets, etc.).
    • Allergic patients experiencing side effects or reduced effectiveness of their allergy medications.
    • Patients who wish to reduce their medication intake.
    • People with allergic asthma who want to reduce their asthma medication use.
    • Patients suffering from eczema or atopic dermatitis.
    • People who suffer from severe allergic reactions to bee stings, fire ants, or wasp stings.

  • What are Allergy Drops?

A specific amount of natural allergen extract is placed under the tongue, causing the body to become tolerant to the allergens.
